Question by ldnboy: what exercises do mma fighters do in the weight room to improve strength and speed?
ive heard that even though many mma fighters are huge they dont train like bodybuilders! does anybody know what exercises they do and how many set and reps they usually perform?

Best answer:

Answer by Al
Interval training for cardio – for explosive energy

Squats for overall power

Pushups for chest strength (as opposed to bench presses)

Shoulder presses for punching power

Don’t forget most of them spend time working on their boxing, BJJ and wrestling as well

Which is why 99% of MMA fighters have lean functional muscle as opposed to bulky slow muscle mass

Check in the phone book. “Good” is, in my experience, a somewhat subjective concept because what’s “good” for one person isn’t always “good” for another. You may have to take a look at some different schools in the area before settling on one (depending on whether or not anyone else answers your question).

no real requirements per say, you just need to start getting your name out there by winning fights in local competitions. Until eventually you get a chance to sign with a league.

Question by Bruno M: What workout should I do to prepare for MMA classes?
Im probably going to start MMA classes in about to months so what are some things i gcan do to get prepared for it?

Best answer:

Answer by Seagull
- work on core strength and flexibility. I do Muay Thai now, have done some BJJ and MMA. The one thing I see in newbie males is that they’re too “stiff in the hips.”

- work on condition, and focus on interval training. Among other things, start training with 1 minute sprint + 1 minute rest, then 2 minute sprints + 1 minute rest, etc. up to 5 minutes for 4-5 rounds.

- work on functional strength/plyometrics in general, but don’t get too hung up on strength, especially non-functional strength. (Too many newbie males get obsessed with getting muscles and forget the rest, and then wonder why they’re exhausted after 30 seconds of fighting.)

Skills pay the bills. It sounds like you are probably well conditioned so get to a jiu-jitsu place and a boxing/kickboxing place and work on skills.

All of the above. The easiest way to fall out of a workout routine is to get bored. So keep up the variety as best as you can and don’t give up.
